5 Tips for a Temporary Home Office

  • July 21, 2025

If you have the option to work from home but don’t have a dedicated home office, keep reading. We’ve gathered our 5 best tips for bringing work home without making it a permanent part of your living space.

A temporary home office can be a great solution when, for example, your child is sick, you have an awkwardly timed dentist appointment, or the weather is too rough to venture outside.

Let’s be honest: finding space for a home office isn’t always easy. hjemmekontor. But that shouldn’t stop you from creating effective, temporary setups when you need them most. With just a few adjustments, you can create a functional workspace.

1. Think in zones

Set up a dedicated “work zone” where you only keep items related to your job. It’s common to feel less productive when working from home because we often associate home with everything but work.

That’s why it’s important to keep your zone as work-related as possible. If you have newspapers, knitting projects, or a broken bike light lying around, they can quickly become distractions.

When the workday is over, you can easily pack away your temporary office and reclaim your home space.

2. Keep water within reach

According to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration adults should drink between 1–1.5 liters of water daily. And let’s face it: most of us don’t.

Keep a large water bottle or a carafe at your workstation so you can refill your glass easily. Otherwise, that empty glass might sit there all day—and by the time you notice, you’ve got a splitting headache from dehydration.

3. Lighting, lighting, lighting

Poor lighting can quickly drain your energy. Set up somewhere with plenty of natural light—ideally near a window. You can also use a trusty old desk lamp. We recommend investing in a small LED lamp so you can adjust the brightness. Good lighting works wonders for your concentration and helps prevent headaches.

→ Read more about how your workplace might provide a good lamp (and other office equipment) through a gross salary scheme or a CYOD-solution.

4. Lower your expectations

Since your temporary home office isn’t the workspace you’re used to, don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t complete all the tasks you’d planned. You might get interrupted or distracted—especially if you have a chiropractor appointment in the middle of the day.

Assign yourself the more routine, bread-and-butter tasks that you’d normally put off when working from home. Save the heavier, more demanding work for when you’re back in your usual environment.

5. You can’t spell “home office” without “home”

Even though working from home can feel like a big adjustment, there are plenty of ways to make the most of your surroundings. Treat yourself to a special lunch—order in or whip up something with all your favorite ingredients from the kitchen. Sleep in a little, since you don’t need to commute. And hey, maybe the coffee is even better at home.

If the home office is only a temporary solution, it’s perfectly fine to lean into the comforts of home to make the workday cozier.
