With these tools, we can figure out who will love doing the accounting for us, and so they should naturally be the ones to do it. We really care about that. It’s the best investment we’ve ever made—investing in testing and analyzing people. This is how we get the highest success rate in making them happy.
It’s logical, and it doesn’t make us an innovative company in that regard, but it’s something every business basically knows.
We had an incredibly cool experience where we truly felt the significance of a strong company culture. We had a complete disaster with an update on our devices—an update that went wrong. It meant that all MySelfie devices had to be checked before being used. We quickly realized that if they weren’t checked, our customer service would get overwhelmed in the evening, and some customers might not be able to get through—and we didn’t want to risk that.
When we discovered this on Friday morning, all our employees chose to stay. They stayed late into the evening without us asking them to. Some even went out on Saturday and Sunday to help customers. None of our customers noticed anything was wrong, and we can only thank our employees for that.
I think what I’m trying to say is that working at MySelfie is more than just showing up from 8 to 4. It’s my impression that we have amazing energy. Personally, I don’t see work as work—I see it as 30% of my life, and if 30% of my life isn’t fun, then it’s going to affect the remaining 70%. If you’re not having fun, you’re just wasting your life—and your life is the most valuable thing we can think of. It’s that simple.
We’ve ended up in a culture where far too many people go to work, leave their heads in the locker room, do their 8 hours, and then go home to “enjoy” life, only to look forward to the weekend.
My employees are, of course, welcome to look forward to the weekends, but I want to create a company where we make those 30% of our lives enjoyable. A company where, by Sunday, you look forward to going to work, instead of sighing as Monday approaches.
