The Flexibility Made the Difference

When Oscar Almstrup and Kristian Anker started LegalHero, it was with a dream of digitalizing legal advice. Their goal was to bring innovation to a conservative industry. The key word from the very beginning has been “flexibility,” which proved beneficial when the COVID-19 crisis hit.

“When we were hiring our first advisors, we quickly realized that flexibility was attractive. We didn’t have a big brand, and neither Oscar nor I came from large firms, but we quickly managed to bring 25 advisors on board at LegalHero. So, it must have been something else, people were attracted to.

It was probably because people were looking for this ‘platform economy’ that we were trying to tap into. But there were also people who wanted a more flexible work life and liked the idea that they could still work on what they found interesting, while also having terms they could dictate themselves. I think that appealed to a lot of people. As an employer, we have a vision of being a place with a lot of freedom, where there’s freedom with responsibility. We have relatively few meetings and try not to have too many processes in place, leaving most things up to people’s own abilities. So, it’s a high degree of freedom, and a high demand for flexibility, because we don’t require people to be in the office. They can work from anywhere they want. It’s not always that you do your best work in an open office environment. For some, it’s with a cup of tea under a blanket in a reading room, or something else.”

The Future of Business

Our entire business is built around the idea that you can work from wherever you want, and with the tasks you prioritize first. It’s very much this startup culture within a traditional world. I believe our employees can be anyone who can work from anywhere. We have a developer in Aalborg, who is our CPO, whom we see very, very rarely. And we can have people who we don’t see for weeks because they work from home. During COVID, it was pretty much just like we usually do. The only difference was that no one was in the office, but we still had meetings where we greeted each other. So in that way, I think we were born remote, and that’s probably why we were better equipped for it than many others during this period.

Derfor valgte vi Flexbuy, nemlig pga. fleksibiliteten. Vi har før haft medarbejdere, som blev tilknyttet, og som så af forskellige årsager smuttede igen, og så stod vi med noget skidedyrt materiale og tænkte, at det var utroligt irriterende, at vi havde købt det. Så kunne udstyret bare finde en plads i organisationen og bare stå og trække afskrivninger. Og ovenikøbet er det rigtig frustrerende, at – når vi arbejder med teknologi, og vi gerne vil føle, at vi skal være på niveau med udviklingen – så hver gang der kommer nye produkter, som vi gerne vil have, så var vi bundet op på vores gamle udstyr. Så ideen om at vi kunne flekse det ind og ud, og relativt hurtigt få noget nyt udstyr ind, det var en total “nobrainer,” da vi fandt ud af, at vi kunne det.

Personligt er jeg en person, der tager lang tid om at tage beslutninger om sådan nogle ting – fordi jeg er jurist, og ikke kan finde ud af at tage beslutninger. Men da jeg hørte om Flexbuy, tænkte jeg: “Yes, det skal vi have, og vi skal have det hele”. – Og jeg er sindssygt glad for det. Jeg har været stor fan, og er stadig stor fan af ideen, om at man kan flekse ind og ud, som man kan.
